Fluffy links & Knut - 20th March 2007

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Nicolas Sarkozy has a pretty flashy site for his election campaign.

Just noticed Google Sketchup and the Google “Build Your Campus in 3D Competition

Twittermaps is pretty cool - works well in Berlin as every Street is in the map’s database. Twittervision is amazing to have a look at too, especially for people who don’t know what twitter is, but then again, twittering (or is it tweeting) with people you know/admire makes it a lot more interesting.

Up until Knut came along, a video of a German Army parade was my most popular youtube video by far. Today, Knut overtook the Bundeswehr and also claimed a milestone - 10,000 views and speeding towards 20,000 (currently 17,539). Helped by a link from “Blick” - something like The Sun in Switzerland - over 5500 clicks.

Knut is in danger though - some animal rights activists don’t believe he can’t live a normal life as a polar bear and should be put down! The zoo has rejected these calls so far. The latest video of Knut then (he has to start getting used to the water, is 8.2kg and will soon be in the zoo for all to see):

UPDATE: Knut was never really in danger. Apparently it was only one man Frank Albrecht, and he believed that Knut should have died when his mother rejected him. The papers took this to mean that he wanted Knut to be put down but this isn’t the case at all.

Stuff local to Limerick

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

Update: There is of course the “ShareIT” Initiative down in Cork too on the 24th March.

ShareIT will offer free training by experienced business people who are experts in their respect areas to companies and individuals starting out in the world of IT. These training days are open to startup companies, companies with less than 10 employees and individuals considering starting an IT business.

From conoro: Job Seekers page gone up at it@cork for the ex-Motorola people. Check it and reblog it please. http://tinyurl.com/yol39u

Anyone heard of openCoffee club? The Cork OpenCoffee Club is kicking off tomorrow (16th March) in Luigi Malone’s on Emmet Place in Cork City Centre.
The Limerick one looks like it is being co-ordinated by James and Mary and they are aiming for the 22nd March from 11 to 12am and then hopefully every fortnight after that.

What is is actually? According to localglo.be:

This is an attempt to establish recognized, open and regular meeting places where entrepreneurs can meet with investors (and anyone else who fancies coming along) in a totally informal setting.

or for Cork people

The aim of the club is to bring together a good mix of entrepreneurs, investors, developers and marketers, plus anyone else who is interested in growing the start-up community in Cork.

twitterTwitter - the latest in social networking and ubiquitous communication…or a way to flood your phone/IM with messages? It’s curious and I like it so far - my twitter page

Has Open-Source Lost it’s Halo Is open-source still a grassroots social movement made up of idealistic underdogs trying to revolutionize an amoral industry?

Are the Gardai reading your emails(Free registration required)? Not many safeguards either by the look of it.

What to do when your SUSE installation cannot get a package you need but you have the source - try this Rpm Program Installation - Tips for openSuse10.2. I used it for SUSE Linux 9.3

This was funny but the lesson is: sometimes you should read the manual BEFORE something goes wrong like Sarah and the egg

KnutKnut - the cuddly polar bear runs about his garden. Just ignore the German or read my translation in the video description.
Knut has his own blog (German) now too - very modern of RBB (Berlin’s public broadcaster)

Well that last series of Top Gear came to a swift end after just 6 episodes. But here is a clip I hadn’t seen before.

Did you know of the militant unionism in Sweden? - Sofia Appelgren was put out of business! Here is the background and here is the news that she has given up

Speaking of women - did you know that 8th March is Women’s day. A couple of my female friends have given me a warning shot across the bows to have something for Thursday! Here is the wikipedia entry but to put it shortly, it came about from protests by women working in factories in the early 1900’s and later looking for more rights. States in the Soviet Union kept up the tradition whereas western states concentrated more on St. Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day as far as I can see.

The day remains an official holiday in Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam, and is observed by men giving the women in their lives - mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc., flowers and small gifts.

This is a simple but pretty cool idea: HowTo: Free and Huge custom poster for your wall

Congrats to Damien and all those involved in organising the Irish Blog Awards, hopefully I’ll be there next year
